The Good Bowels and Nice Papayas
I have been conducting research on the papaya fruit and its beneficial effects on the colon and detoxification of the bowels. And this is a perfect time of year for you to be thinking about detox.
The colon is the body's sewage system. If the sewage system stops flowing efficiently, toxins collect in the colon and become a breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria. Blood capillaries lining the colon wall begin to absorb toxins into the blood-stream which lowers the overall performance of bodily functions. Over time, these toxins can build up in the body, settling in the various organs, causing fatigue, digestive problems, weight gain and a variety of skin, hair and health problems.
The nutrients in the papaya fruit have been shown to be particularly beneficial for colon health and internal cleansing. Papaya fibre [1] is able to bind to toxins in the colon and keep them away from the healthy colon cells. In addition, papaya's folate, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and vitamin E have each been associated with a reduced risk of both cardiovascular disease [2] and colon cancer [3]. Papaya also contains papain [4], an enzyme which is often extracted to make digestive enzyme supplements because it is so efficient in digesting protein.
Papain - which is more concentrated when the fruit is unripe - also plays a protective role for the cells . [5].
Research [6] confirms the nutrients in papaya not only facilitate digestive health, but provide synergistic and powerful protection for colon cells from free radical damage to their DNA. Increasing your intake of these nutrients by enjoying papaya fruit, preferably as a food or in a supplement, can therefore help protect colon health, and by so doing promote internal cleansing and overall health and wellbeing.
